CICADA and other poems on (un)becoming is a sound, video, and poetry experience comissioned for Deepwater Literary Festival's 2024 fundraiser DO NOT DISTURB, an evening of vignettes set in the rooms of the Hotel Darby in Narrowsburg NY.
We often see insects and creatures that hide under (and within) beds as repulsive, and we’ve created a host of metaphors “insectivising” ourselves.
CICADA explores our unsightly identities, roles we become because they are spoken unto us, believed about us, and we adopt them as truth.
What happens when we accept these narratives? What happens when we dissolve them and reclaim the truths we are? Sometimes, a metamorphosis — complete breakdown — is needed to become something new.
